Think hello!

Comment and I'll get back to you -- voicemail, videomail, textmail, telepathic messages, they're all good.

I check email more often than I log into AIM, so that's usually the best way to reach me, but feel free to say hello if you see me on AIM, and I can chat there at length if we meet up by prearrangement or happy coincidence.

Where'd ya wanna meet, Miss Frost?

[He's leaving the rest alone. It isn't the first time he's been on his own. Probably won't be the last.]

If you're willing to cope with Dr. Xavier giving you a quick once-over afterwards, as near to your apartment as you're willing to have him, so that you can go home and recuperate for the rest of Sunday.

If not, somewhere near whichever hospital you'd prefer to have tests run at, or near the clinic if you want that.

[Emma notices. Well, Tony Stark ought to be able to find a way to come up with enough money for a share of rent within a month.]

You're welcome to come here. We can use the meeting room again, or somewhere else [Danger Room, of course, but this isn't an encrypted call] if you're more comfortable there.

[She doesn't comment on his walking back afterwards. If he's fit, that's fine.]

We'll figure that you once you're here. [The Danger Room probably has medical sensors which might be useful, but Kevin might be relucant for pretty much the same reason.]

Here. What is it, Michael?

[A moderate concern for Michael, and a stronger one for the general situation, is deliberately projected with the query.]

Yes. Kevin's lawyer says he can't talk to me about it and thinks that the fact that the law singles out age makes the question of age a triable issue of fact that he was planning to research.

...

I have more immediate concern for Kevin's ... self-control. I would have urged him to practice periods of time without using his powers if I had had more time to mentor him in. I would not have urged him to stop using them overnight and let the desire build to the boiling point.

Bail is being applied for; the occasional perception of Newcomers as being able to just go home is a problem, as is the severity of the charges.

Since when is someone being willing to discuss a matter with you an issue?

As do I, which is why I was urging Julian to have him speak to me rather than through Julian.

The Core's ability to hold Newcomers is a moot point. Bail or not. I still maintain this wasn't a legal arrest.

Since I was trying to have a conversation with someone whom I don't trust with the information that I can read his mind at range? He was planning to have a paralegal find cases in which physical evidence as to age of animals had been admitted since he didn't believe there was precedent for physical tests as to age of humans, if you mean what else he was thinking.

You realize unless we get Kevin released to our custody either on bail or as a minor, technically
we'll be kidnapping him long enough to get his addiction partly under control.

Can you think of a case where a Newcomer vanished from the prison itself, or from direct observation? In terms of legal arrest, I agree but that won't help Kevin - even if they throw out the evidence, now that they know who they can just ask him the same questions and get the same answers.

If you want to spite Batman and/or make it clear the precedent does not allow a private individual - one with a legal bounty on his own head if I recall correctly - to waylay an individual after Sirens and drag him even to the police, be my guest. Let me know if I can help. Even if I weren't angry I don't like the precedent.... SERO/AGI could claim that the person they were apprehending for medical research/slavery had been intended for the police.

It's not as if Kevin lives in hiding, would have been difficult for the police to find, or had a bounty on his head by name. Someone couldn't be bothered to do it that way, or more likely just plain wanted to do it himself.

Which reminds me. When Batman angered you, could he have been trying to create villain to hunt?

Returning your call.

[Although telephones exist in Sabriel's world, she's had a rather dodgy start with something that's purely digital. A whole day of randomly pressing buttons and she's at least figured out how to turn her NV on and off and how to make calls.]

Hello?

You're very welcome. It was refreshing to talk to someone who was ... paying appropriate attention to the important business of survival.

I assume someone has told you the basics already?

[Sabriel smiles a little at the compliment.]

Not...quite. I have a lot of questions that need answering. Firstly, just where are we?

We're in an entirely different time and space from wherever you left. According to everyone who has been returned and then brought back to tell the tale, if you're returned, you'll be returned to the same place and time you were taken from.

That said, you are on Siren's Port, which is an island off the west coast of Canada. Since I don't recognize the terms "The Old Kingdom" or "Ancelstierre", I suspect those names won't mean anything to you. So for now, the island is Siren's Port, the city is Siren's Port, we can't leave, and there's a little bit of trade with people who can come and go but not that much; if we didn't have a lot of fancy technology and/or appropriate powers, the island would starve. Fortunately, we have both. Food is more expensive than I'm used to, but what I'm used to is incredibly cheap compared to most of human history; it's quite manageable.

[Sabriel takes a moment to silently mouth the words "Canada" and "Siren's Port." Emma is right; these words don't mean anything to her.]

So...we're all sort of prisoners or something? Why can't we leave?

Re: Returning your call.

We're confined to the island and the water near it.

The thing which brought us here, which we call the Core, starts hurting people as they get more than a mile offshore. If your pain tolerance is good, you can make it several miles, but then it starts actually harming you, and if you get far enough away anyone will pass out and die.

Also ... this place isn't connected to your home in any normal fashion. You could sail around the world and not see your home. If the Core released you without sending you here, someone would have to send you across the dimensions.

[Sabriel digests all of this, not responding for a few moments as she lets the implications sink in.
Can't go home. Can't leave.
What would happen to the Old Kingdom then without an Abhorsen? Who would be the one to stop the Dead from preying on the people who lived there? If there were no Abhorsen, necromancers could wreak havoc unchallenged, enslaving hundreds...
And Touchstone...what would he do? He was the rightful King. There was no way he could repair the Great Charter Stones alone, or much else without her help. How would he restore order?]

Has anyone ever made it back to their homes?

[She can't really accept that there's absolutely no way out. She just *can't*.]
